Thanks r/Beatmatch, had my first gig tonight...

Long post ahead... but I'm still really happy and wanted to share.
I've always wanted to DJ but my school was never open to "dances" until we got a new principal this year. So I got started, and tuned into the tutorials and videos and helpful comments here.
We had our annual Autumn Fest today which was an event with games and food and whatnot and I had a 30 minute set at the end of the night for open dancefloor.
Now, the only thing that didn't go as planned was that my set was cut short by about 10 minutes due to the fact that everything before took too long... so the set of 16 tracks I planned at home needed to be shortened. Yikes.
The experience was amazing though. I opened with "Easy" by Mat Zo & Porter Robinson and saw some confused faces; this wasn't mainstream music! That's okay. The buildup of energy was still good and the first drop had everyone on their feet jumping. I transition quickly into Don't You Worry Child (Dave Silcox bootleg) and they went wild. Apparently a "sing along" type playlist was a good idea after all.
Beatmatching was a bit more difficult due to the speaker right above my head and my lack of isolating headphones - still done relatively well since no one stopped dancing, and it sounded a lot more forgiveable in that environment than in my bedroom.
I originally had some non-mainstream tracks planned out but since my set got cut short I made it my goal to keep everyone hyped till the end, so all the tracks they knew (Spectrum, Safe and Sound, Save the World, Clarity (all remixes)) came out. I know, forgive me. But I didn't play Levels.
Ended off with a the Headhunterz remix of Clarity at the request of my friend, so that tempo change was interesting but somehow still pleasant. At the end of the night I had pretty much everyone who stayed to clean up come up to me to say good job or some variant of it, and they seemed genuinely pleased. I liked that feeling.
So thanks, Beatmatch. Everything helpful I've read I applied tonight, including the avoiding of Serato face. I'm still a long ways from "good", but its great to know that I can keep a student population happy through DJing.

What has happened to EDM? (Serious Opinionated Rant)

I'm a pretty old school LA and AZ Dj. I remember the days of warehouse parties in downtown LA mid to end of the ninety's. I attended the first Monster Massive, EDC, Audiotistic, and Dune. I was there for Paul Oakenfolds final performance before they shutdown Club Freedom. Ive shared the stage with AK1200 and Lisa D. I've had the honor of meeting legends like Dj Dan, Tiesto, Icey, and even Jazzy Jeff. I still think PVD, Digweed, Sander Klienenberg, Seb Fontaine, and Pete Tong are gods on the 1's and 2's. I don't tell you this as some sort of a pissing match, just simply trying to put my age and experiences into perspective for why I made this post.
I took some time off from the lifestyle and main stream scene for about 4 years pursuing other musical interests. I was present for the Electro boom and all of its glory and completely missed the dubstep rebirth (ya Dubstep has been around a lot longer than Skrillex, trust me).
I've recently built my new laboratory and have a sweet, I mean friggin sweet, new DDJ-SX2 Ive put in place of my trusty MK2's and CDJ's (still have em in the flight cases though). I am really digging Serato and all of its capability. Things that I only dreamed about doing are now completely possible and coupled with samples and predefined loops and Serato Flip.. Yea you get the point.
Anyways, so here is the reason for the post. What has happened to EDM? Ive spent a good amount of time on Beatport and various other sites looking for awesome new choons and all I've found, save a few far and between tracks, is a bunch of regurgitated garbage. Ive obtained packs of top tracks for various genre in the past year only to find maybe 3 worthwhile tracks to even analyze.
The big issue is not so much I don't like the tracks, I play plenty of tracks I don't personally like but I know they are still good. The issue is they all sound the same... Almost everything sounds like its being mashed and forced into an Electro... Everything is about the drop now. Some songs that only hit the 2.5 minute mark have like 4 drops. I go see a local Dj perform and its like hes got ADD, nothing plays for more than 40 seconds and its only for the drop....
Progressive Trance and House, one of my favorite genre, have also followed suit. I cannot say a single newer track in the Progressive section of any music site is actually Progressive anything, its Electro with more bass drops...I've found today, to my dismay, even DnB is following this trend though I've been a little more successful in finding what I'm looking for.
Now Im not new to the game, I've spent countless hours queuing up record after record only to actually purchase 3 of which only 1 was a true gem. So I am fully aware that its not uncommon to sift through tons of music you do not care to add to your arsenal.
But before I took my break there were just loads and loads of awesome music hitting the scene. I have thousands of "get on your feet and dance" MP3's I've collected between early 2000's and 2010 where I was using CDJ's and Torq. I have tons of awesome truly progressive tracks in many genre that allow for wonderful blending and mixing to create almost unique sounds during your set.
So why is it now I can obtain a full months of music and end up deleting the whole thing? Why are all genre's seemingly trying to sound the same? Is the industry just over saturated? Or am I just too old and this is what EDM has evolved into and I should just accept it? Or am I not alone in feeling this way about the current state of EDM?
Thanks for reading
